A very active group of weed warriors have been working in the Langs Beach Scenic Reserve over the past two years. A trust has been formed to engage with DOC and local councils regarding formation of walking and cycling tracks in our area.
The Langs Beach Reserve was home to some very nasty invasive weeds such as wild ginger, climbing asparagus. The group cleared a problem area filled with wild ginger, which meant access was gained to a lovely valley filled with regenerating native bush. Slowly but surely, access tracks for weed work are becoming walking tracks for people to enjoy. The trust was formed with a view to encouraging projects of this type in and around Wairahi/Langs Beach.

Work is underway on the Coastal Walkway between Langs Beach and Waipu Cove to improve the walkability and safety of the track. This project jointly funded by the Whangarei District Council and the Wairahi Tracks Trust will be completed by Christmas to the extent that funds allow.
The Trackies have already put in weeks of intensive effort of delivering onto site all of the precut timber and metal required by the contractor to build the 29 sets of steps designed for the improvement of the track. We’re talking here of many lengths of timber, and the bagging and placement of many bags of gravel, and all of this without easy access and across rather difficult terrain.
It is a team effort ! Many, many thanks to all who volunteered their time and energy - whether lugging the bags of gravel and the wood, pointing the pegs, letting the Trackies use their facilities and, in particular the owners of neighboring properties who provided access. Not to mention Northpine , ITM, Mountfield for their generous contributions.
So now it’s in the hands of the building contractors, Northland Park Care Ltd, so bring on summer so we an all enjoy the track over the holiday season!
Wairahi Tracks Trust still need funds to complete the track and really appreciate any donation - a givealittle page has been set up for donations and signs placed at either end of the track. Alternatively, email [email protected]
